Question

What is the difference between an RFI and a submittal?

An RFI (Request for Information) is a question. Something in the drawings or specs is unclear, conflicting, or missing, and the contractor asks the architect or engineer to clarify it.

A submittal is a proposal. Before installing a specified product, the contractor sends product data, shop drawings, or samples for approval that what they plan to install meets the spec.

Why it matters

An RFI often blocks the work until it is answered. A submittal blocks one specific installation until it is approved. Knowing which one you are filing changes who needs to see it and how urgent it is.
