Question
Do I need a change order for a small change on a construction job?
In most cases, yes. A change order is a formal amendment to the contract. If a change adds cost, adds time, or changes the scope, a written and approved change order is what makes the extra work authorized and payable.
Why small ones matter too
Small changes add up. Handled verbally, they become the disputes that start with "I never approved that." Some contracts set a dollar threshold or allow a written direction to proceed while the price is settled, so read yours.
What to do
Price it, get it approved in writing before the work starts, and update the budget. How to price a change order so you actually get paid for it shows the build-up with an example.
